Our beginnings
MAPEI (pronounced “mah-PAY”) stands for Materiali Ausiliari Per l’Edilizia e l’Industria (Auxiliary Materials for Building and Industry).
Founded as a family business that manufactured paint and masonry products, MAPEI opened its doors in 1937 in Milan, Italy, with a three-person workforce. Thanks to a forward-thinking founder, specialization soon became a hallmark of MAPEI.
A world leader
MAPEI’s first big innovation was developing flooring adhesives, primarily for linoleum. Products for tile, stone, wood and carpet soon followed. By identifying trends in the building industry, MAPEI continues to stay a step ahead, bringing innovative products to markets around the world.
The company expanded to the United States in 1983 and moved its MAPEI North America headquarters to Deerfield Beach, FL, in 2000. Since then, MAPEI has developed into a world leader in commercial, industrial and residential installation products – ranging from surface-preparation products and adhesives, to sealants and maintenance products.
The MAPEI community now includes MAPEI Home, a Website solely dedicated to do-it-yourselfers, home designers and residential professionals. Thanks to this Website’s tools, FAQs and step-by-step guides, DIY tiling projects have never been easier.
Our commitment to research
Equipped with the most cutting-edge equipment available, MAPEI laboratories work in close contact with each other, collaborating with prestigious universities in addition to scientific and industrial research institutes. To remain on the cutting edge of innovation, MAPEI reinvests 5% of its annual revenues into researching and developing new products and technologies.
