FAQs

FAQ
Should I use an unsanded grout like Keracolor U?

Unsanded grouts like MAPEI's Keracolor U grout are best suited for tight grout joints 1/8" or smaller. Keracolor U is also recommended for grouting surfaces that can be easily scratched such as mixed-material mosaics, polished stone, glossy wall tile and glass tile (especially delicate glass tile). Keracolor U should always be tested in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Can Keracolor U be used in joints 1/8" or larger?

When MAPEI's Keracolor U is used for joints wider than 1/8" (3 mm), it may result in hairline cracks and the grout may dry to a level lower than the height of the surface of the tile. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor® S, Ultracolor® Plus FA or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for joints more than 1/8" (3 mm) wide.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor U with installations of natural stone?

MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of natural stone. When grouting installations of polished stone tile, it is recommended to build a mockup (sample board) or, at the very least, test Keracolor U in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Can Keracolor U be used to grout unfilled travertine and limestone tile?

If the desired look is to fill the voids and pitted areas, MAPEI's Keracolor U grout is a great choice. Choose a color of Keracolor U grout that most closely resembles the color of the travertine tile.

FAQ
Can Keracolor U be used to grout pebble tile?

It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout when grouting pebble stone and river rock mosaics.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor U with installations of glass tile?

MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of glass tile. When grouting installations of delicate glass tile, it is recommended to build a mockup (sample board) or, at the very least, test Keracolor U in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor U with glossy wall tile?

MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of glossy wall tile. When grouting installations of antique or handmade wall tile, it is recommended to build a mockup (sample board) or, at the very least, test Keracolor U in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Is Keracolor U recommended with wood-look tile?

It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for grouting installations of wood-look plank tile.

FAQ
Can Keracolor U be used in a pool?

MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be used in submerged applications such as pools, but a 21-day curing time is required before filling the pool. MAPEI’s Ultracolor® Plus FA grout is a better choice for pool installations.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor U to regrout over old grout?

Cement-based grouts like MAPEI's Keracolor U grout won’t effectively bond to themselves. So if the existing grout is damaged, then at least 2/3 of the depth of the grout joint must be removed before regrouting. Note: If the existing grout is simply discolored, MAPEI’s UltraCare™ Grout Refresh can restore the look without removing the existing grout.

FAQ
Can Keracolor U be mixed with an additive?

MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be mixed with MAPEI’s UltraCare™ Grout Maximizer. • 10 lbs. of Keracolor U grout requires 49 U.S. oz. of UltraCare Grout Maximizer.

FAQ
What is the proper way to mix a cement-based grout?

Be sure to follow the packaging instructions carefully when mixing. Keep the water-to-powder ratios correct and adhere to the mixing and resting times. Use a drill rather than mixing by hand. Do not add more water if the product begins to thicken. If you are using a grout additive such as MAPEI's UltraCare™ Grout Maximizer, keep the correct ratios of liquid additive to grout powder, do not add water, and adhere to the mixing and resting times. Use a drill rather than mixing by hand. Do not add more liquid additive or add water if the product begins to thicken.

FAQ
Do I have to mix the entire bag of Keracolor U grout at once?

If preferred, MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be mixed in small amounts. First, dry-blend the grout, because color pigments can settle to the bottom of the bag during shipping. Then mix 1 U.S. cup of water to 3 U.S. cups of grout powder.

FAQ
Does Keracolor U need to be sealed?

MAPEI's Keracolor U is a cement-based grout and is porous. Therefore, it will absorb stains and should be sealed. Sealing Keracolor U grout will help to maintain it, keep it clean and minimize discoloration. Choose a high-quality grout sealer.

FAQ
How long until Keracolor U can be sealed?

Wait at least 5 days before applying a sealer over MAPEI's Keracolor U grout.
