FAQs
Can Keracolor® S be used in joints 1/8" (3 mm) or smaller?
MAPEI's Keracolor S contains sand. So, when it is used for joints narrower than 1/8" (3 mm), it will be difficult to pack the grout fully into the joint. This often results in voids below the surface of the grout, which turn into areas of missing grout over time. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor U, Ultracolor® Plus FA or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for joints less than 1/8" (3 mm) wide.
Can Keracolor® S be used to grout unfilled travertine and limestone tile?
It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor U grout or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout when grouting unfilled travertine tile.
Can I use Keracolor® S with installations of glass tile?
MAPEI's Keracolor S grout contains sand and may scratch glass surfaces. It is best to use Keracolor U grout for glass tile and delicate glass tile. If a sanded appearance is desired, a colored-quartz (CQ) grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ, can sometimes be used successfully, but a test panel should be grouted and inspected for unacceptable scratching before grouting.
Can I use Keracolor® S with glossy wall tile?
MAPEI's Keracolor S grout contains sand and may scratch delicate finishes. It is best to use Keracolor U grout for glossy wall tile. If a sanded appearance is desired, a colored-quartz (CQ) grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ, can sometimes be used successfully, but a test panel should be grouted and inspected for unacceptable scratching before grouting.
Should I use an unsanded grout, such as Keracolor® U?
Unsanded grouts, such as MAPEI's Keracolor U grout, are best suited for tight grout joints 1/8" (3 mm) or smaller. Keracolor U is also recommended for grouting surfaces that can be easily scratched, such as mixed-material mosaics, polished stone, glossy wall tile and glass tile (especially delicate glass tile). Keracolor U should always be tested in an inconspicuous area before grouting.
Can Keracolor® U be used in joints 1/8" (3 mm) or larger?
When MAPEI's Keracolor U is used for joints wider than 1/8" (3 mm), it may result in hairline cracks and the grout may dry to a level lower than the height of the surface of the tile. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor S, Ultracolor® Plus FA or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for joints more than 1/8" (3 mm) wide.
Can I use Keracolor® U with installations of natural stone?
MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of natural stone with grout joints of 1/8" (3 mm) or less. When grouting installations of polished stone tile, it is recommended to build a mockup (sample board) or, at the very least, test Keracolor U in an inconspicuous area before grouting.
Can Keracolor® U be used to grout unfilled travertine and limestone tile?
If the desired look is to fill the voids and pitted areas, MAPEI's Keracolor U grout is a great choice. Choose a color of Keracolor U grout that most closely resembles the color of the travertine tile.
Can Keracolor® U be used to grout pebble tile?
It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout when grouting pebble stone and river rock mosaics.
Can I use Keracolor® U with installations of glass tile?
MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of glass tile with grout joints of 1/8" (3 mm) or less. Can I use Keracolor® U with glossy wall tile?
MAPEI's Keracolor U is unsanded. So, it's a great choice for grouting most installations of glossy wall tile with grout joints of 1/8" (3 mm) or less. Is Keracolor® U recommended with wood-look tile?
It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA, MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ or Kerapoxy® CQ grout for grouting installations of wood-look plank tile.
Do I have to mix the entire bag ofKeracolor® U grout at once?
If preferred, MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be mixed in small amounts. First, dry-blend the grout because color pigments can settle to the bottom of the bag during shipping. Then, mix 1 U.S. cup (237 mL) of water to 3 U.S. cups (710 mL) of grout powder.
Does Keracolor® U need to be sealed?
MAPEI's Keracolor U is a cement-based grout and is porous. Therefore, it will absorb stains and should be sealed. Sealing Keracolor U grout will help to maintain it, keep it clean and minimize discoloration. Choose a high-quality grout sealer, such as our UltraCare® Penetrating Plus SB Stone & Porcelain Tile Sealer.
How long until Keracolor® U can be sealed?
Wait at least 3 days before applying a sealer over MAPEI's Keracolor U grout.
Can I mix UltraCare® Grout Maximizer with other grouts?

Can Keracolor® S and Keracolor® U grouts be mixed with an additive?
Keracolor S and Keracolor U can be mixed with MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Maximizer, according to the instructions.
Can Kerapoxy® CQ be used to grout unfilled travertine and limestone tile?
MAPEI's Kerapoxy CQ grout is not recommended for use with travertine and limestone tile. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor® U grout or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout when grouting travertine tile and/or filling voids in travertine tile.
Can Keracolor® U be used in a pool?
MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be used in submerged applications, such as pools, but a 21-day curing time is required before filling the pool. MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout is a better choice for pool installations.
Can I use Keracolor® U to regrout over old grout?
Cement-based grouts, such as MAPEI's Keracolor U grout, will not effectively bond to themselves or other grout types. So, if the existing grout is damaged, then at least 2/3 of the depth of the grout joint must be removed before regrouting. Note: If the existing grout is simply discolored, MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Refresh™ can restore the look without removing the existing grout.
Can Keracolor® U be mixed with an additive?
MAPEI's Keracolor U grout can be mixed with MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Maximizer. One 10-lb. (4.54-kg) bag of Keracolor U grout requires 49 U.S. oz. (1 449 mL) of UltraCare Grout Maximizer.
