FAQs

FAQ
Should I use a sanded grout, such as Keracolor® S ?

Sanded grouts, such as MAPEI's Keracolor S grout, are generally recommended for grout joints 1/8" (3 mm) and larger. Because sanded grouts contain sand, they typically do not work well in grout joints smaller than 1/8" (3 mm) wide. Keracolor S should always be tested in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S be used in joints 1/8" (3 mm) or smaller?

MAPEI's Keracolor S contains sand. So, when it is used for joints narrower than 1/8" (3 mm), it will be difficult to pack the grout fully into the joint. This often results in voids below the surface of the grout, which turn into areas of missing grout over time. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor U, Ultracolor® Plus FA or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for joints less than 1/8" (3 mm) wide.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor® S with installations of natural stone?

MAPEI's Keracolor S grout contains sand. So, it is generally not recommended with installations of polished stone tile. If grouting honed or tumbled stone, it is recommended to build a mockup (sample board) or, at the very least, test Keracolor S in an inconspicuous area before grouting.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S be used to grout unfilled travertine and limestone tile?

It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor U grout or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout when grouting unfilled travertine tile.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S be used to grout pebble tile?

It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout when grouting pebble stone and river rock mosaics.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor® S with installations of glass tile?

MAPEI's Keracolor S grout contains sand and may scratch glass surfaces. It is best to use Keracolor U grout for glass tile and delicate glass tile. If a sanded appearance is desired, a colored-quartz (CQ) grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ, can sometimes be used successfully, but a test panel should be grouted and inspected for unacceptable scratching before grouting.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor® S with glossy wall tile?

MAPEI's Keracolor S grout contains sand and may scratch delicate finishes. It is best to use Keracolor U grout for glossy wall tile. If a sanded appearance is desired, a colored-quartz (CQ) grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ, can sometimes be used successfully, but a test panel should be grouted and inspected for unacceptable scratching before grouting.

FAQ
Is Keracolor® S recommended with wood-look tile?

It is best to use MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for grouting installations of wood-look plank tile.

FAQ
Do I have to mix the entire bag of Keracolor® S grout at once?

If preferred, MAPEI's Keracolor S grout can be mixed in small amounts. First, dry-blend the grout because color pigments can settle to the bottom of the bag during shipping. Then, mix 1 U.S. cup (237 mL) of water to 4 U.S. cups (946 mL) of grout powder.

FAQ
Does Keracolor® S need to be sealed?

MAPEI's Keracolor S is a cement-based grout and is porous. Therefore, it will absorb stains and should be sealed. Sealing Keracolor S grout will help to maintain it, keep it clean and minimize discoloration. Choose a high-quality grout sealer.

FAQ
How long until Keracolor® S can be sealed?

Wait at least 2 days (48 hours) before applying a sealer over MAPEI's Keracolor S grout.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® U be used in joints 1/8" (3 mm) or larger?

When MAPEI's Keracolor U is used for joints wider than 1/8" (3 mm), it may result in hairline cracks and the grout may dry to a level lower than the height of the surface of the tile. It is best to use MAPEI's Keracolor S, Ultracolor® Plus FA or MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ grout for joints more than 1/8" (3 mm) wide.

FAQ
Can I mix UltraCare® Grout Maximizer with other grouts?

MAPEI's UltraCare Grout Maximizer was specifically designed to be a replacement for water when mixing MAPEI's Keracolor® S and Keracolor U grouts. It is not formulated for use with other grouts.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S and Keracolor® U grouts be mixed with an additive?

Keracolor S and Keracolor U can be mixed with MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Maximizer, according to the instructions.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S be used in a pool?

MAPEI's Keracolor S grout can be used in submerged applications, such as pools, but a 21-day curing time is required before filling the pool. MAPEI's Ultracolor® Plus FA grout is a better choice for pool installations where submersion can be completed after 72 hours of grouting when the tiles are installed with an appropriate rapid- setting mortar.

FAQ
Can I use Keracolor® S to regrout over old grout?

Cement-based grouts, such as MAPEI's Keracolor S grout, will not effectively bond to themselves. So, if the existing grout is damaged, then at least 2/3 of the depth of the grout joint must be removed before regrouting. The only grout that can be successfully applied over old grout, and that will adhere and perform properly if the grout joint is not filled correctly initially, is MAPEI Flexcolor® CQ. The original and new grout must both be MAPEI Flexcolor CQ or it will not work. Note: If the existing grout is simply discolored, MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Refresh™ can restore the look without removal of the existing grout.

FAQ
Can Keracolor® S be mixed with an additive?

MAPEI's Keracolor S grout can be mixed with MAPEI's UltraCare® Grout Maximizer. One 10-lb. (4.54-kg) bag of Keracolor S grout requires 26 U.S. oz. (769 mL) of UltraCare Grout Maximizer. One 25-lb. (11.3-kg) bag of Keracolor S grout requires 64 U.S. oz. (1 893 mL) of UltraCare Grout Maximizer.
